Dr. David J. Harris, III is proud to bring his expertise as a comprehensive ophthalmologist, cataract surgeon, and cornea specialist to East Tennessee. He studied Biochemistry & Cellular and Molecular Biology at the University of Tennessee in Knoxville before receiving his medical degree from the James H. Quillen College of Medicine at East Tennessee State University. He completed his Ophthalmology residency and Cornea & External Diseases fellowship at the University of Kentucky, College of Medicine.


After completing fellowship, Dr. Harris was appointed as Assistant Clinical Professor of Ophthalmology to the faculty of the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai in New York City. In this capacity, he trained ophthalmology residents and cornea fellows at the prestigious New York Eye and Ear Infirmary, while also serving patients through his faculty practice. He was awarded The Jorge N. Buxton, M.D., Microsurgical Educator Award – For Outstanding Contributions to the Microsurgical Training of the Ophthalmology Residents. During his time in New York City, Dr. Harris also served as the Medical Director for the Department of Ophthalmology at Mount Sinai West and Morningside hospitals. Most recently, he worked in a private practice setting in New Jersey. He is now focused on providing comprehensive and cornea eye care services at University Eye Specialists.


Dr. Harris offers a wide range of services, including comprehensive eye exams, cataract and corneal surgery, laser eye treatments, and other advanced ophthalmic surgical interventions. Driven by a commitment to advancing patient care, Dr. Harris stays abreast of the latest developments in ophthalmology. He is particularly interested in innovative treatments such as laser cataract surgery, refractive surgery, advanced intraocular lens implants and minimally invasive corneal surgery, aiming to improve the quality of life for his patients and enhance their visual outcomes.


Board-certified by the American Board of Ophthalmology (ABO), Dr. Harris is an active member of the American Academy of Ophthalmology (AAO). Through his dedication, he remains at the forefront of the field, continuously expanding his knowledge and skills to better serve his patients.
